Hughes of Birmingham Chassepot Rifle **SOLD**
A rare and unusual Birmingham contracted 11mm Chassepot needle fire rifle, for the French military. Made by Robert Hughes of Birmingham, this piece bears the standard British proof marks of the day, and is almost indistinguishable by design to those rifles made in the main French Arsenals.
The metalwork has some legacy pitting, as the rifle was apparently stored in a loft for a great many years. The woodwork is on the good side for a rifle of it's age, with a few small of minor cracks only.
The bore has good rifling, with minimal pitting, and the bolt retains it's original needle and obturating ring.
A very unusual piece, not often happened upon in such an unmolested condition.
