M1822T Percussion Musket
  • M1822T Percussion Musket

A .69 circa 1841 percussion conversation of a French M1822 smooth bore flintlock musket.

The lockplate denotes MTE St Etienne (Royal Armoury) manufacture, with various proof marks to the barrel. A rack number of '2527' is also stamped to the stock, with a faint cartouche stamp on the opposing side.

The metalwork shows some signs of legacy pitting, but is bright in appearance, with good woodwork, and an excellently crisp action.

As many as half of the 147,000 European muskets imported during the American Civil war were thought to be M1822 percussion muskets.

This type of musket also saw use by the French during the outset of the Crimean war in the 1850's, with subsequent efforts made to rifle these barrels up to 0.708", to replicate the capability of the M1842 rifled musket.
