Ships Swivel Blunderbuss
A large and tremendously impressive naval swivel blunderbuss.
These enormous scattergun were mounted on the ship's quarterdeck rail, to serve as a powerful mutiny deterrent for the crew. They were likely also used as a means of defending the officer's quarter deck from boarding parties.
At 113cm long, with a massive 2.4" muzzle flare - motivational tools don't come any more imposing than this.
The thick barrel walls would be loaded with loose pistol shot - which could spread over a vast portion of the gun deck below.
The barrel has 2 x British proof stamps, and a serial number of M1531, also shared with the butt plate. The piece is jn good condition for it's age, with very few cracks to the wood - complete with it's full length wooden ram rod.
Mounted on a nice piece of English oak, this is certainly the last of it's kind, from the golden age of sail.
